I love my mom (hi mom, love you!), and of course I want to express my love and appreciation for her on Mother's Day. But not all mothers cherish the bizarre array of lady baubles and gewgaws we seem to be inundated with at this time of year. Most moms of adult children, mine included, don't want another necklace adorned with her kids' birthstones or a heart-shaped jewelry box engraved with sweet missives about a mother's love. And unfortunately, I'm a grown-ass woman (according to age anyway) so a handmade collage with a poem scribbled on it ain't gonna cut it. Trust me, I've tried. So let's break free of the tchotch and flowers and give mom something nice and thoughtful that she can use! Here are 5 not-so-sappy, but thoughtful gift ideas for your kickass mom…Read More
Finally, a brand new post to tell you that I did not get murdered, move off the grid, or more importantly, abandon this blog.
The legit excuse for my extended absence? Our house burned down! In the not-so-catchily-named Thomas Fire, which put my little beachside hometown of Ventura, California on the map! And when I say "our" house I mean our family house, the one I grew up in, the one that held all our little treasures, pictures, heirlooms, and knick knacks, and the one I just happened to be temporarily living in. I know, right!? Whose house burns down!? Anyway...Read More
In my family, stocking stuffer gifting is a competitive sport. Everyone gets one for every other member of our 9 person family and the pressure's on to give the most creative, useful, or cool gift. Welcome to my great-grandmother Neva's Best Ever Party Mix. This isn't the bland, boring bagel chip yawn you buy in a bag at 7-Eleven, no. It's perfectly savory and salty with a lil kick at the end. Legend has it, the recipe was bequeathed to my great-grandmother by her neighbor Mary Schooner, you know, the one with the yappy dogs. Regardless, it's our family's tradition now. We make two batches a few days before Thanksgiving and then hide it in the Designated Party Mix Tupperware until the big day. Otherwise it will be gone before the Turkey's even in the oven. And it's only to be eaten between Thanksgiving and Christmas. We have lots of party mix related rules. Because it's just that good...Read More
Thanksgiving wines tend to be a little tricky because they have to pair with such a variety of delicious fatty fatty food flavors. Now my golden rule of pairing is: drink whatever the hell you want. My mom drinks Chardonnay, without abandon, with anything - lasagna, short ribs, ice cream - anytime, anywhere, and she's happy as a lil clam. But if you're into trying to really pair wine with your Thanksgiving feast this year (I will be forcing some branching out at our family gathering for sure), here are 10 cool and unusual wines that will make you the coolest wino at the table...Read More
