When I was 11 or so, my Orthodontist (the arbiter of all things braces and retainers), had a pumpkin decorating contest. I never thought of myself as a creative, partially because my mom did all of my school projects "with my help." But this time, I came up with an amazing idea all by my little old braces-wearing-self. And, spoiler...I won the contest. Along with a $15 gift certificate to Outback Steakhouse. Yeah, it was really the win that mattered.
So if you want to really impress your friends/orthodontist/teeth aficionados using my 11 year old creativity, read on...
And here it is, my Award Winning Double-Sided Vampire Pumpkin: Orthodontia Themed. In an illustrative illustration re-creation:
So as the name suggests, this vampire pumpkin is double-sided. On the first side, he's just a regular old vampire with googly eyes and crooked candy corn teeth. His crooked teeth make him unhappy and angry (see his eyebrows?), I guess my thinking was, he's a vampire and likely can't sink his teeth into some sweet virgin flesh as cleanly as he'd like. See the menacing cape draped over his back? This comes into play in a minute.
Now he has a little tag attached to him saying something like "This little vampire's teeth are too crooked for him to suck any blood. Turn him around and lift his cape to see what happens after he visits the Orthodontist! P.S. Sometimes he turns into a bat." Little foreshadowing there at the end. Turn him around and flip his cape over, and voila! The big reveal: The cape was being held up by the styrofoam wings of a happy little vampire bat with braces stuck to his now straight candy corn teeth. The braces are the backs of rhinestones because it was the early 90's and I definitely owned a Bedazzler.
Yeah, it's a wee complicated. But as the only creative contest I've ever one, I'm sticking with it's clever originality. So DIY yourself an orthodontia-themed pumpkin this Halloween. I guarantee no one else on your block will have anything like it.
