Now, there are a lot of awesome French-related gifts for both the lover of France and the speaker of French, but there are a lot of equally terribly tchotchke gifts that no one needs ever. As a France nut myself, I can tell you that well-meaning friends have given me enough eiffel tower ornaments and French poodle mousepads to fill a store that no one would visit. So without further adieu (see what I did there?), here are 6 gifts any Francophile will actually like, all for under $50:
Miam Miam Box, starts at $9/month
I just discovered this monthly box subscription and I'm obsessed. They send french snacks and candies every month - things French people (okay, mostly kids) actually eat. Nothing gourmet here, just awesome normal grocery store treats. Especially perfect for anyone who studied abroad or has spent any time living in France.
France-Amerique Magazine, $45 for 6-month subscription
Apparently it's the only bi-lingual French-English magazine to be found in the U.S. Written for an American audience about French culture and politics, all of the articles are translated from French to English. Such an awesome idea, and the rare gift that's great for any level of French language learner.
Kikkerland Boules Set, $26.12
Boules, otherwise known as Petanque in France, is very similar to it's Italian cousin Bocce, which has gotten more popular over the last few years. Anyone who's gone to the south of France has seen old men in legit berets smoking and throwing the boule around. A super fun and easy to learn lawn game that's very portable. I like this one in particular because it's cheap and has a cool vintage carrying case (I'm a sucker for packaging).
French saying Metro, Boulot, Dodo Tote, $22
My favorite French saying "metro, boulot, dodo" essentially translates to "commute, work, sleep." It's the Frenchies much more clever, not to mention rhymier, version of "live to work." A cool gift for any stylish, busy Francophilette. I own this tote, I love this tote, and full disclosure, I made this tote. So you can buy it on my new Etsy store and support your dear friend me!
Paris Map Illustrated Print, starts at $25.87
This is far and away my favorite Paris map print I've come across. I hesitate to put prints on here because, you know, art = usually not a great gift, but I think this one is too perfect to resist. And an easy gift for anyone who aimes gay Paree.
Crepe Pan, $15.85 and Crepe Spreader/Spatula Set, $15.95
Who doesn't love a good crepe? Well some people I'm sure, but don't worry about them. Those thin, crispity edged crepes are almost impossible to make without special equipment and this set can be bought on the cheap (with good Amazon reviews to boot). Throw some Nutella in there and maybe a crepe mix too, and you've got yourself a cool creperie gift set.
